Before being turned off by the higher cost of a hybrid car, check whether your state offers a tax rebate on its purchase. In Colorado, I believe, the cost difference between the hybrid and a regular car of equivalent size can be taken as a full credit on your state tax. That mean a Honda Civic Hybrid (which I like better than the original Prius) costs no more than a regular Honda Civic LX. The Civic hybrid gets 50+ mpg and is bigger than the original Prius (I haven't seen the 2004 Prius but I am told it's improved over the 2003 in spaciousness).
