Black got his original wealth from two gold mines he was in on through his investment in Hollinger Argus. The Hollinger Mine found by Benny Hollinger which became the richest and largest mine in North America, of 50 million tons @ 0.40 ounces per ton (Wildcat is working on similar opportunities) and the Kerr Addison which weighed in at 13 million ounces of around 0.25 ounces per ton gold. Black did not like gold, and eventually segued into newspapers. A boy who sat on the board of the Lakeshore Mine (now KGI) and who staked the Hargreaves mine, Wright, became the founder of the Globe and Mail.

Benny was a boy from Cornwall who was told to stake in the wrong place. He actually asked from prospectors where a good place to stake was. They were staking near the then fabulous Dome discovery where the outcrop had to be boilerplated with iron to prevent people from stealing gold. They told him "oh at the other end of the lake is great". Benny staked and the Hollinger mine was found. The McIntyre, right across the road, and the Hollinger together produced 36 million ounces.
