Globe says Bre-X trail goes cold for RCMP investigation

Tue 12 Aug 97
The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, August 12, edition that the RCMP are experiencing difficulty in their investigation of the Bre-X Minerals debacle. The Globe's Paul Waldie writes that RCMP staff sergeant Bill Ralston says no one wants to talk to the police anymore. Last week six RCMP officers returned from Indonesia after a month long trip to investigate the alleged fraud at Bre-X's Busang site. Sources in Jakarta say the RCMP had difficulty accessing Busang because of jurisdictional conflicts with local police.Unnamed sources also say the RCMP arrived too late in Jakarta to be
able to follow any criminal trail. Staff Sgt Ralston says investigators have requested an interview with Mr Felderhof but there is no guarantee he will cooperate. Private investigators hired by Bre-X have linked the fraud to the late Michael de Guzman and other former Bre-X geologists, living in the Philippines, who have been told by their lawyers not to say anything.
Many Bre-X investors question the independence of the private investigators.
