Opterons appear to operate much more efficiently than Pentiums that run at much higher CPU rates. This will spread 64-bit onto the desktop. Plus graphics work benefits greatly and that fact will be used in marketing (see Apple).

At the data server level, 64-bit is very much a factor. It is not fun to run an SAP on a 32-bit system (or a WIndows system for that matter).
