The situation in respect of the Bush Administration and the environment, is more like this: we have scrubbed a lot of the air and water, and tied up a lot of wilderness, by this time. However, there is always incrementally more to do. The Administration suggests that having done most of the job, the remainder can be harmlessly subjected to a cost benefit ration in order to strike a better balance, for example, between the limitation of industrial emissions and jobs, or the preservation of species and the survival of the timber industry. What is an eminently reasonable attitude on the part of the Administration becomes "the devastation of the environment" among enviro- fundamentalists, and a slippery slope to more mainstream groups........
