You fail to differentiate between giving policy speeches and interacting with reporters and other debaters. Kerry seems to suffer from never answering a question in a way that has an obvious cost to him. When we question people and analyze whether we believe them, we usually find most believable those that have made statements that they had to know hurt them. In the real world we trust those same people when they tell us things that work in their favor. Kerry looks like the kid that's telling us what we want to hear. Bush and Dean look like the kid that's telling us what they believe, no matter how bad it makes them look sometimes. We tend to trust people like that. It's a lesson Kerry should have learned by now.

Unfortunately not all people who are blunt enough to make statements against their interest are bright enough to be president. Bush has proven that conclusively.
