Sure it can. But you are asking for a subtle evaluation of the effects of various chemicals in a situation of rising longevity and improving health. It is very difficult, and perhaps impossible, to say how much better things might have been if not for various marginal factors. It is not like searching for the source of particular symptoms, or of morbidity.......
