That is certainly correct. I had a friend who owned an old Mercedes diesel at the time of the gasoline lines and crunch of the 1970s. It got about 30 mpg as opposed to about an average of 15-20 mpg (my slant-six 1965 Plymouth got about 17 mph highway and I though that was good at the time). And at that time diesel was cheaper than gasoline. He began to get offers to buy it for more than he had paid several years earlier.

In the event of a sudden doubling of gasoline prices everyone will want a Prius.

I sort of half thought about buying a Lincoln Continental in the 1970s just to park in fron of the house and sit in. Those all of a sudden were worth half of what they had been (getting maybe 10 mpg).
