Thanks for that, but from reading that speech, how will we know we've succeeded, exactly?

Our strategy in Iraq has three objectives: destroying the terrorists, enlisting the support of other nations for a free Iraq and helping Iraqis assume responsibility for their own defense and their own future.

The first problem there is "destroying the terrorists". Isn't it important to know that there is no more terror? The idea of destroying "the terrorists" means a knowledge of who they are. But they have no distiction except the desire and ability to blow things up. Anyone can do that, you don't need a nationality... it's impossible to say when that's been accomplished. The only metric is if terrorist attacks have stopped.

This leaves a loophole the neocons can drive ten divisions through, and attack any country, anywhere they wish, whether or not there is any direct threat to the U.S.

I guess that's why I distrust that statement as any sort of definition of "success".

The comparison to WWII doesn't work. There is no responsible body to sign unconditional surrender.

The only real metric for success is the American way of life... in other words -- do we have our freedoms?
If not, the terrorists are winning.
