Henry Kissinger doesn't get things right very often, but one thing he said was true, "We don't have he answers to their problems". The best we can do is act as honest brokers. Honest brokers don't unilaterally supply sophisticated weapons and billions per year to one side. The purpose of the UN is to be involved in these disputes, rather than allowing the politics of a nation like the US to be subverted into religious wars. Americans are getting tired of the unending battles being waged with American blood and dollars, imo.
