Lindy, my guess is that the threats of war by the People's Republic of China is Jiang Zemin's last hurrah before he's finally sidelined by Hu Jintao, who I can't believe is so stupid as to threaten war against Taiwan. Jiang is in charge of the People's Liberation Army [liberation from what is a good question - which he might find out the answer to if he's not careful].
I've issued an official warning to Jiang and co to get a life and think in 21st century ways instead of 19th. Message 19523017
Our son in law's father swam for freedom from Mao's maelstrom to Hong Kong, married a banana [Kiwi Chinese = yellow on the outside, white on the inside] and had 4 children, the oldest of who is now in the family [under NZ common law anyway, if not official marriage]. We have Taiwanese friends and it's disconcerting to have barbaric threats from maniacs running the world's most populous country. My mother was born in Dalian and had a lifelong interest in it and friendship for it.
It's very sad to see this sort of MADness carrying on when there's no need whatsoever. Just as New Zealand was once part of Oz but is now legally fully independent, but economically dependent and effectively still part of it, Taiwan should have a similar relationship with China.
NZ, Oz, China, Taiwan, Singapore, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and others could all be happy happy like one big family of cuzzies around a lake. China's being naughty.
