DiVit - let's look at the real numbers and trends to get an idea of what is happening.

Even SPARC, which I consider to be in its twilight, probably sells a million units a year - there are 500,000 server sales alone. PowerPC 970 is selling at a million a year rate. Itanium, in its whole history, has not sold 100,000 units. Otellini's claim that they will sell 100,000 units next year did not pass the 'burst of laughter' test with most folks in the know, but even if we accept it, it is not in the running until it gets to a real run rate (say, people actually paying for the processor) until it gets to a point where it looks like it will get to that million run rate annually.

As far as power, we need to look at comparable parts. Power dissipation problems with Intel's current and next generation parts are well documented. Just last month Intel came out with new reference designs for both PC cases and CPU coolers designed to pull the heat out of next generation desktops without excessive noise. And in the last few weeks they have been advising OEMs that high end Prescott products will actually generate 120W under heavy use. So these things are not fiction. Intel's management of the perception on these issues is admirable, but we need to look at the reality of Intel finding ways to remain competitive with products that generate twice the heat of the competition and see what impact that might have.
