There is no will for it, Karen. Combination of altruism - how can you turn them away! - and the need for somebody to clean the sewers.

You sure are a pessimist or a fatalist or something today. What's the matter? Sun not shining in Hawaii?

What I said is that we should deal with the immigration problem. What you inferred from that was that we should kick the Mexicans out. I guess that's one approach, but it's not the only one. If we don't have a debate about it, we're just burying out heads in the sand. At the rate we're going, this country will be bilingual and culturally even before too long. I'm reconciled to it. It is inevitable unless we do something to change things. You seem to be implying that that is a bad thing. I'm not so sure that it is. What I'm sure of is that it's a bad thing to just drift along until there's no turning back. If we go there, we should go their with our eyes wide open.

When Bush took office it looked like he might have in mind some sort of guest worker program. In my mind that would rationalize things a bit, at least buy us some time, and get control of our borders. But he's been distracted and now that won't happen. I think that's a terrible shame. Our priorities are all screwed up. And we don't deal with problems while they are still amenable to solution, we wait until it's too late.
