Interesting notion... But the first thing to be noted is that unlike the medieval Church the UN is a creation and extension of the major nation-state of the era. Clearly, even the disagreements are in the interests of the administration's purpose of unilateralism as outlined in PNAC and "Grand Chessboard", etc.

A good book on the Church in the medieval era is "A World Lit Only By Fire", Wm Manchester. Incredible corruption of power, once again.

I swear, there is a PhD thesis or two to be found in describing the current attempts to make the UN occupy the foreign policy position that the Church had in medieval Europe - an opposite yet powerful counterweight to the power of local rulers.

Of course, the Church was capable of taking care of itself. The UN is a hopeless mess. But they keep trying.
