SGI - now there's a powerful vendor who can move the market - NOT!

I thought we were looking at Itanium's presence in the market Sun currently sells into. The results that I listed are the ones that corporate buyers are looking at.

BTW - did you look at the tests SGI was running? Those tests - AMBER molecular simulation, BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) application from the National Center of Biotechnology Information, a suite of tools designed to identify similar protein and DNA sequences within genomic databases, STAR-CDTM computational fluid dynamics test suite...

Those are not the tests that an enterprise buyer would care about, unless the particular enterprise is mapping the human genome (not a big market BTW).

I'm sure Itanium will eventually get some good benchmark numbers on database tests - it should be a good part for that job.

The price performance TPC-H results are typically won by smaller systems which have the capacity to execute the large database test. Performance may be 1/10 of the high performers, but for companies looking to develop a system with headroom at a low entry cost, that performance may be adequate. I was frankly surprised that Sun had the price performance lead on the two most important benchmarks, I would have expected a Xeon system in that slot.

With an Opteron based system, Sun might get the lead in both categories... but, as you say, time will tell.
