OK here is my take on this "Dean is the most left" spin that the repubs are putting out.
Dean is the most leftist on taxes (100% rescindment of tax cuts),
100% rescind of Bush tax cuts is actually the conservative fiscal position to take, this is the RIGHT MOVE
war and terror ("Hamas are soldiers"),
Again it is actually BUSH who has taken this country to a far right position with his war on terror and Dean stating the facts about Israel and Al Queida etc is the right position... notice Dean didn't fall in the polls when he said not to take sides with Israel vs. Palestinian
health care (full government coverage),
He MIGHT, repeat MIGHT be too liberal here but he has a history of trying to shore up the medicare mess by aligning himself with the Gingrich plan in 94 (although to get through the dem primaries he tries to deny it)... healthcare is a tough one it is hard to say what the correct position is... we may be at a point where the majority wants single payer, I don't know.
foreign policy (wants human rights sanctions against the Saudis)
Again could be a mainstream position
and gay rights (pro civil unions and has support of most gay groups).
Gay rights? Who cares? Like this is a major issue, it is only that because Bush is making it into an issue to draw attention away from his abysmal record. I am for gay marriage and why in the world anybody would oppose it is beyond me. The south votes on god, guns, gays and they will go Bush anyway so maybe this is a red herring issue.
Dean has made it clear he is against the PBA ban and that is the right position to take for most of the country so he lost the anti-gay marriage vote just on that.
Reading your post about how Dean is too far left is just a reminder of the ignorance of the right and how politics are polluted with their diatribe. Deans positions, on most issues, are the winning positions as far as the west coast is concerned. I think the play well in the northeast also. The midwest and south may not play along but the rust belt is so mired in job loss that is all they care about, Dean wins that argument. The south and Zell Millers "national party" are relegated to a few bigoted states imho. |
