The greatest thing that happened to Al Qaeda was the decade or more of "maybe it'll go away" delusional thinking that allowed so many Afghanistan alumni to essentially be openly educated and brainwashed without anyone bothering to do anything till 9/11 actually took place. It's hardly as if the world was not aware of what was going on ! I'd seen several television reports in France concerning the Afghanistan connection in terrorist training in the Algerian civil war when it was at its worst some years back.

If 9/11 had not happened, bin Laden would probably to this day be running his summer vacation camp, educating terrorists.

Better late than never to start doing something about the cancer.
