Well I did a quick Google search to update my numbers, and here is what I found:

- 50% of health care in US is paid for by the government -- a bit more than 40% of that is Medicare, a bit more than 30% Medicaid, and the rest veterans and other programs.

- The percent of wasted government medical bureaucracy is less than half that of private medical insurance.

- 40 cents of every dollar of the non-government heath care is consumed by the medical bureaucracy. So if the government takes that over and is as inefficient as it is handling medicare and medicare now, we will be saving 25 cents on the dollar (or 12% of the overall health care pie).

- Bottom line is we can have a national health care system by just doubling the medicare taxes everybody is paying right now. Say, by doubling everybody's medicare contribution from 2.x% of salary to 4.x%, and have the government pick up the 2% increase in employer contributions.

The interesting side effect of this will be an instant boost of competitiveness of US industry, which will be largely freed from paying and managing health care benefits, and a huge increase in US productivity, by eliminating a big chunk of the medical bureaucracy. Additionally, the relative position of small businesses, who are responsible for most job creation in the US, will be strengthened.
