You probably will save some at the local level, but my numbers are rough guesstimates. I basically say that we need to have "the government" pick up medical expenses of the order of 5% of GDP to extend Medicare-style medical insurance to everybody. And this can be covered by doubling the (roughly) 5% medicare tax that everybody is now paying on their total salaries (self+employer contribution).

Of course it's a tall order. Insurance companies will fight this tooth and nail. No wonder. They suck away 40 cents of every private health care dollar "managing" the system.
