Well said Karen! Hits the nail on the head. The myth that our past was rosie is far too often stated as the truth.

It reminded me of the problems with our government schools.

We have this myth that at some time in our past parents were totally involved with every aspect of their children's education. So we blame parents today for our failed school system. The truth is schools and teachers were given more freedom to discipline and set standards in the past. When a child failed the grade, they failed the darn grade! None of this social promotion stuff existed, none of this coddling the child who couldn't read. You sat down, listened and did your work in class or you failed.

Parents were too busy to sit down every night with their children and do homework then, just as they are too busy now, yet we managed to teach a generation of Americans how to read, write and do math pretty well.

This is especially true for my parents who were first generation immigrants. Do people really believe a father who worked 12-14 hours a day in the 30's hauling ice in a truck sat down with his kids at night and worked on math with him? Some of them could barely speak the language well enough to get a job.

They worked their butts off building America and our school system was expected to work its butt off teaching our kids. Now most of our government schools point fingers and blame parents for not working 2 hours a night with their kids teaching them the basics. Excuse me school system, what the heck have you been doing 6 hours or more each and every day? In other words, why am I paying you?
