With 82% of heating oil use in NE and mid atlantic states, I find in my own area of mid atlantic that gas heat, appliances and fireplaces are ubiquitous in new housing in Pennsylvania.

And there is one heck of a lot of new housing.

Just a quick search:
Census figures show 10.4% of existing housing (PA) in 2000 was constructed since 1990. I would estimate that figure to be 12-13% at the end of 2003. That is well over 600K single family housing units built since 1990, many of which are heated by gas.

That's a lot of new gas use in just one state...
