I have held some South African's and it's true that there is some opportunity cost, but not as much as you might expect. GFI and HMY (the only ones I am prepared to hold) both pay decent dividends and I have done pretty well selling slightly out of the money covered calls which pays the bills while I hold them. If I get called (I did for part of my HMY at $15 a while back) I just treat it as a sale and replace them when the price dips again.
