While we cannot ignore N Korea...I do believe it is time to pull the 36,000 troops out of there… we cannot keep nearly 100,000 uniformed folks in positions intended to win the cold war.
I agree completely with that.
I predict the draft gets reinstated within 3-4 years
The draft would not be terribly useful. Training requirements in today’s tech-heavy military are so extensive that short-term draftees would be cycled out shortly after they become useful. Applying the kind of intense training needed to soldiers that will go back to civilian life in two years would just be too wasteful. The US military today is structured in a way that requires professional force, which is why retaining qualified people is so important.
It’s important to remember that while we are in a war, it is not a conventional war, and it will not be won by conventional deployments of conventional force. It will certainly not be won by invading and occupying nations. It could very easily be lost that way. It’s a war in which fighting smart is way more important than the quantity of force that can be deployed.
Fortunately for us the rough men are in charge.
Which rough men would those be? Certainly not our perfumed prince of a President, a lily-fingered spoiled rich boy whose entire professional and political career was built on family influence. Colin Powell has more rough in his little finger than Bush has in his entire body.
Call it prejudice if you will, but I have a hard time trusting people who have never had to overcome challenges on their own, using nothing but their own internal resources. When push comes to shove, in my experience, people like that are likely to fold.
When American women finally comprehend that the muslim extremists intend to stop the education of their daughters and for all of them to dress in Burkhas...when they feel the threat personally, they will demand that their men fight.
That threat may exist in Osama's wet dream, but it has no place in reality. American women these days are more likely to worry about seeing their son's throats slit by angry mobs in faraway places, in fights that are not really even part of the war on terror, than they are about the possibility of fundamentalist Islam taking over the US, which is about as likely as an asteroid strike. |
