Can't totally agree with you there mike. First, the 'boomers' are defined as being born 1946-1964. There is a small segment right before the boomers that society calls 'the forgotten generation'...born 1935-1945. They are also known as the 'sandwich generation'...they have to take care of their aging parents, as well as their children. There are not large numbers of these folks, because of the Depression and WWII.
Our Government defines today a family as "rich" if the income is $70,000 +......!! I know, makes me laugh too.
Those "mean old folks" who have saved pennies in jars, eaten bread and milk for dinner, and all the other etcs you hear about, were sold a bill of goods by FDR, in that SS was to be their 'insurance'. Many of these people were coming off the farms, didn't have more than a HS education, and did work hard to support themselves and their families.
What really makes me sad is that so many younger kids (under 40) really don't have any kind of understanding as to what their grandparents and parents had to do in order for them to have all the conveniences of modern life, and take it for granted.
My own kids have good educations, which we and they, provided. No government help, because we were "making too much money." They grew up with the idea that it was good to help others who needed it, because we did help, thus they learned as well.
Both our grown children and grandkids have a good idea of those things. My hobby has been genealogy/history for years, and because of that, both generations have a better sense of those who made the journey ahead of them, and some of the obstacles and also joys that were on those paths. |
