The draft would not be terribly useful. Training requirements in today’s tech-heavy military are so extensive that short-term draftees would be cycled out shortly after they become useful. Applying the kind of intense training needed to soldiers that will go back to civilian life in two years would just be too wasteful. The US military today is structured in a way that requires professional force, which is why retaining qualified people is so important. I completely disagree. Most of our current volunteers get 4 months of combat training, serve 3-4 years and get discharged. Most of our reserves and NG Forces serving in combat have 4 months of combat training, serve 6-12 months on active duty and go home. Everyone is very happy with their performance. The US individual combat equipment is awesome but easy to learn to use. There are plenty of schooled officers and well-trained NCOs for the heavier equipment. Our history proves the concept: All of the draftees who served in Korea and Vietnam got 4 months of combat training. The WWII draftees got 90 days training at most. We have the ability to ramp military inductions and the historical knowledge to do it. The best and most experienced of those serving today become the instructors for the new draftees. When your son, Kerry's son, Dean's son, and Daschle's son are not just eligible for the draft...but likely to be drafted...ya'll will have an entirely different view of the military. By the way, thanks for the pay raise. The military appropriations bill signed by Bush yesterday locked in my 42nd consecutive annual military pay raise. GO ARMY!
