Wonderful anecdote, though I cannot comprehend why Begin asked the Foreign Minister a question about the source of any British/Israeli disagreement. He surely knew what the response would be. And where his comments could possibly lead. The kind of discussion that followed should have taken place elsewhere, if at all.

Begin's anger at the Allies for not bombing the rail lines leading to Auschwitz was misdirected. None of the participants to the conversation were in a position to affect how or where bombing would take place, tough Thatcher's response was just as impolitic. She could have easily said something to the effect that she was not privy to the considerations involved or, better, agreed with Begin's point about diverting 50-70 aircraft since Begin's point was a simple one that's probably impossible to refute.

Begin was a prickly guy, spoke his mind, but not always at the most opportune times. Thatcher was a tough nut, too.
