A year ago this was seen as a death knell for any challenger. Now, it isn't mentioned as much and my guess is the challenger to Bush gains a HUGE war chest from all the industries on the other side of this Bush boondoggle, and there are many of those.

Telecommunications and high tech are probably the most fervent anti-Bush group, also the richest industry, but you also have tourism, media and medicine (non pharma). I don't think money is any object this time around. George Soros is matching all democratic contributions.

There is also the traditional rich democratic causes of labor and general womens issues. I'm sure George Bush thought long and hard when he signed that PBA ban, and he calculated the resulting loss he would take on non-Bible belt women's vote. Or maybe, he didn't give it much thought at all and just "shot from the hip" again.
