Tricord Network Storage Architecture Wins Editor's Choice from Computer Technology Review
PLYMOUTH, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1997--
High-Performance Network Storage Solution
Lauded for Simplicity, Manageability
Tricord Systems, Inc. has been awarded the prestigious Editor's Choice award from Computer Technology Review Magazine, a leading source of news and commentary on the storage industry. The Editor's Choice, awarded for Tricord's unique network storage architecture, is the first presented in 1997 and appears in the July issue of Computer Technology Review.
Editor Mark Ferelli recognized Tricord's paradigm-shifting approach to network storage, stating that ``Tricord's approach promises to take enterprise storage management to a new level.'' In his product review, Ferelli noted, ``If network attached storage is to become a reality, the knotty problem of multi-host storage has to be addressed. Tricord Systems is addressing the issue with an exciting software offering that should bypass the conventional solution.''
Tricord's network storage architecture has two unique features that function in combination -- a file-intelligent I/O architecture that moves processing requirements from the host to the storage controller and a reliable distributed file system running on the controller that provides a single transparent view of data across disks spanning multiple storage controllers. This combination will provide a simple, easy to manage, reliable, high-performance network storage environment.
``This recognition from a leading industry publication reinforces Tricord's role as a significant new player in the rapidly developing network-attached storage market,'' says John Mitcham, Tricord President and CEO. ``We believe file-intelligent I/O will become a de facto standard for network-attached storage solutions.''
Tricord's software technology will greatly simplify data access and management functions by facilitating the transparent sharing of data on network-attached storage devices. It will provide a multi-host, domain fault tolerant environment for storage clusters with RAID across both disks and controllers. With Tricord's software, adding increased storage will be as easy as plugging a disk array into the network. Tricord's architecture has been developed using the basic building blocks for intelligent I/O subsystems -- leading technologies including Windows NT(R), WindRiver(R) IxWorks(TM) and Intel I960(R) processors -- yet is fully portable to other hardware platforms.
Tricord will market its technology to OEM partners who design, develop and market data storage systems and system components. The technology, combined with an OEM partner's hardware, will enable Tricord partners to bring differentiated products to market faster and at a lower cost than developing these capabilities themselves.
Additional technical information on Tricord's solution appears in the Summer 1997 issue of Computer Technology Review's quarterly publication in an article entitled ``File-Intelligent I/O: New Paradigm for Clustered Storage'' authored by Dr. Sandy Frey, Tricord Vice President and Chief Architect.
