8x8 Inc (EGHT) (6.76 +2.98)

Tobin Smith, the editor of ChangeWave.com, says he always looks for companies that lead the charge in new and novel technologies. Market watchers have been waiting for broadband voice to take off, and Smith thinks this might be the year it finally does. Smith's voice Web telephony pick is 8X8 and its Packet8 voice broadband technology. "First, it has a better product than Vonage," he says. "Second, it just sold off its microelectronics business -- it's now a voice broadband pure play. And the pricing is the killer app here: It's a flat fee, $19.95 a month for unlimited phone calls in the U.S. and Canada and $29.95 per month if you include Europe and Asia." Technically, Smith notes, the stock broke out in early November and has since settled back down on low volume. It now looks as if EGHT is making another run: The stock rose nearly 10% Nov. 18. Smith thinks that 8X8 could be trading as high as $10-$12 in 6 months. [Forbes.com]
