Germany and France made a big mistake opening this wound. In Italy, there is already a deep undertone in the populace that it was a mistake to shift to the Euro. When the shift occurred everyone saw an immediate jump in consumer prices, often close to double what they were previously paying. At the same time wages haven't changed.

I used to think the single currency was a good idea, but now I don't. It doesn't appear to make any sense except the convenience of having one currency throughout Europe.

For some evidence the population hasn't fully accepted the euro, most shops still show lira prices alongside euro prices.
