Lindy, China's threats to kill Taiwanese who don't wish to be enslaved to a cabal in Beijing are one reason I'm so interested in USA politics. Hong Kong was leased. It wasn't independent. Taiwan is independent due to the local population's preference. Also, Taiwan is defensible. Hong Kong was not so defensible. Imagine China's economy if there is a NUN blockade and military strikes where Jiang Zemin lives. He's boss of the PLA. I am hopeful that Hu Jintao has more sense. He hasn't said anything about Taiwan being attacked. Good cop, bad cop routine perhaps. Anyway, Taiwanese independence from China would be like NZ independence from Oz. First thing we do is hang on tighter and beg for closer relations. Taiwanese interests aren't served by independence - they would NOT want to be banned from China. Mqurice
