Internet phone calls threaten regional bells -- WSJ

The Wall St Journal reports in two articles today about the threat of Internet phone calls. The fast-growing service could radically transform the $300 bln telecom industry. The technology strikes fear among Bell phone companies such as BellSouth and SBC, which charge fees when long-distance providers use their lines to complete calls. Internet telephone start-ups aren't subject to the same rules, fees and taxes levied on traditional phone companies which gives them a powerful advantage. Federal regulators will hear arguments on Monday about whether and how to regulate voice calls that are sent over the Internet. To combat the trend, the Bell cos are getting ready to offer their own discounted services. Qwest is launching an Internet phone service in early Dec while Verizon will launch in Q2.

and the spybot-ware and pop-up ads will drive you as crazy as the solicitaions of the land lines !!!!!
