There are certainly many examples of friends going south in a pinch. But having worked in the international relationship building process, I believe in the value of close long-term ties. In fact, that's exactly what I dislike most about the "ad hoc coalition" philosophy. It gives us much less security on important day to day issues. The US is always disposable for other countries in an "ad hoc" world.

Ironically, Blair's bulldog dedication to the US policy in Iraq looks like it came from a manic devotion to the "special relationship" the US and UK share. I don't agree with Blair's actions but I doubt his sincerity much less than I do with Bush.
