I believe in the value of long term ties, but I believe they need to be in the self interest of both countries- otherwise I do not think the long term ties will ever become long term ties. I believe in arranging things so long term interests create long term relationships- but I have a deep distrust of bonds formed for emotional reasons, since emotionalism can turn on a dime, while long term interests rare do. imo, of course
