I had the opportunity today to listen to TV broadcasts from different regions around the world, as well as read web-newspapers from around the world. My interest primarily was to get a feel for opinions re President Bush's visit to Iraq, from the Iraqi people. In general the opinions ranged from :
- it was a good sign - shows Saddam does not control this place
- dont really care coz he didnt visit Iraq/Iraqi people, just visited his troops
- why is he afraid to announce his visit, and meet iraqis ? if he did that, we'd give him our opinion
- he should have stayed for longer than he did, and visited the average Iraqi person
None of this surprised me, because in the US and other free-speech countries, we take it for granted that we can express our opinion without fear of repercussion. What did surprise me, is the ease with which the Iraqi people have learnt that they too can now express an opinion without fear of repercussions, and the same time seem unable to comprehend that in the past such expressions of opinion could have meant severe consequences.
