Hi h0db; Over the short term, Taiwan has enough of an air force that it is unlikely that China could invade.

It's rather difficult to cross bodies of water with military force, that is without already owning a piece of territory on the other side. Hitler and Churchill sat glowering at each other across the English Channel for 4 years before either had put together enough forces to cross that rather narrow body.

To put it in comparison, the English Channel is about 21 miles across. The straits of Taiwan are about 99 miles wide. Those who follow the military aviation industry put their bets on the Taiwanese to defeat the Chinese in a manner far more devastating than the "few" British pilots who stopped the Germans. I realize that as time goes by, China will have a more impressive air force, but I don't expect that the threats will continue. The countries are tied together more and more closely over the years, which is an uncommon recipe for war.
