There was a General Thomas Powers in the Air Force. Curtis LeMay was very worried that he was unstable and would start a war with the Soviets....

There were some extremely reactionary members of the U.S. military in that era. Another really kooky guy was General L.L. Lemnitzer, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1962 who vetted the "Operation Northwoods" scheme which reads like a planning document for Operation 911, executed 40 years later.

Lemnitzer was a John Birch Society charter member. He saw a dirty commie under every State Department bed, and a lot of them around Congress as well. He created a plan to make sure these dirty commies couldn't take over the U.S. government, by making sure he got it first! :)
