Hawaii elected a Republican Governor in an otherwise democratic state. A first in many years.

No, CA electing Arnold is no harbinger, neither is La. electing a democrat. The likely thing you are alluding to is Mary Landrieu's election blunting the string of Republican victories back awhile just as the La. governor's race seemed to blunt the addition of several more Republican governors.

A year's a lifetime in politics.

I'm in Orange County. Dems are still the minority here. While my personal market investments suffered somewhat, they have recovered substantially and other items have done well (real estate, farming). If it's the economy that's going to hurt Bush you had better hope the recovery is fleeting. I don't think the deficit and debt will carry the day.
