The following Wi-Max-Like System (meaning that it's PHYsical Layer technology has been CHOSEN as the standard PHYsical Layer for 802.16a .
(1) MULTIMEDIA = VIDEO, MUSIC, & LARGE FILE TRANSFERS ..
CALGARY, Canada and DALLAS, Texas - July 22, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global provider of market-leading broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Hutton Communications Inc., a distributor of commercial wireless communications and related equipment, demonstrated Wi-LAN's new LIBRA 5800 series products recently in Dallas, Texas. LIBRA 5800 is the license-exempt 5.8 GHz version of Wi-LAN's third generation series of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) products. In a matter of hours, Wi-LAN and Hutton set up a broadband point-to-multipoint network that demonstrated streaming DVD-quality video and music and large file transfers over a four mile (6.4 kilometre) link for a line-of-sight building to building configuration, and over a one mile (1.6 kilometre) link for a non-line-of-sight building to vehicle configuration. Wireless equipment operators, resellers and system integrators experienced real-time broadband wireless performance that no other product has demonstrated.
"I have seen other 5.8 GHz products that claim non-line-of-sight performance, but I have never seen anything like this," said Ron Ryan, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing, Hutton Communications, Inc. "I have never before seen live video and music and large file transfers all happening at the same time flawlessly in a true non-line-of-sight situation. The other demonstrations I have viewed only measured the RF connection and the signal strength. This product is truly unique." ********************************************************** (2) CAPABILITIES OF WI-LAN's (Wi-MAX-Like product) with VOIP : CALGARY, Canada – November 19, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, today launched its new Wireless Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) Solution, which allows transmission of voice communications over Wi-LAN’s broadband wireless access systems with carrier-grade Quality of Service (QoS). The Wireless VoIP Solution provides an extremely competitive economic alternative to traditional wired service for voice traffic, particularly in underserved areas and developing countries, and is an excellent solution to allow competitive local exchange carriers to avoid leased line charges to incumbent carriers. The Wireless VoIP Solution easily integrates with Wi-LAN’s Ultima3 Fixed Wireless Access product series and can be engineered to provide cost effective voice services for up to 7,200 customers per base station.
Number of Subscribers Supported
Wi-LAN’s Wireless VoIP Solution can support up to 800 business users per sector, and up to 1,200 residential users per sector. Base stations can be configured with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 sectors, allowing up to 4,800 business users per base station and up to 7,200 residential users per base station

(3)COMMENT ON WI-LAN's (Wi-MAX-Like product) with VOIP This is extremely disruptive. One Ultima3 Base Station can handle 1000 lines. This means about $30,000 per MONTH of revenue for the operator. And that's even before you add the data offering. The ROI for networks with U3 go through the roof. This is extremely disruptive (it bears repeating) to the telco business, both long distance and local. The competitive LEC doesn't need the incumbent LEC at all. This breaks the bottleneck that almost killed the CLECs in the past few years. "

(5) BLUNT COMMENT ON ATTEMPTS TO USE VOIP , OVER WI-FI: The usual confusion about Wifi capabilities. You can do Netmeeting with VOIP on Wifi if you want to. But would you deploy VOIP over WiFi for your entreprise or your building? I don't think so. We are talking about carrier grade voice here, not some half baked unsecure implementation. |
