Saddam is largely the creation of the CIA. Why don't you think we can control him now? You're probably right. We can control him, or at least keep him underground. But I'm thinking of how is the best way to make the transition with the minimum loss of life all around. Frankenstein was the creation of the good doctor of the same name, but then things went wrong there too. ;^) Given the option of either pulling out right now and leaving Iraq for want...or making a transition to a more internationalized and/or an "Iraqified" security force, with power handed over to Iraqi political control, with elections to follow suit, I choose to support the latter. One of the first things I would do is to embed some freshly trained Iraqis with our troops. This would help the troops communicate with the Iraqi people better, be more sensitive to the needs of the people, and would be a great intelligence gathering and implementing tool.
