<< a real talent. I was surprised that he was struggling early in his career. His loss by leaving a year early to the pros was huge for UCLA >>

No question he was exciting at UCLA.

We obviously had high hopes for him as evidenced by picking him on the first round of the 2001 draft and we sure needed to take a receiver with that pick. No 1 (Thrash) and No 2 (Pinkston) - then and now - aren't exactly Lynn Swan and John Stallworth, and either one would probably not start on most NFL clubs.

In an effort to make him as comfortable as possible by [2001] Kickoff Weekend, the Eagles made Mitchell as uncomfortable as possible during training camp. They threw all his lines at him at once in a bulging playbook that Mitchell estimates contains hundreds more plays and variations than the one he had in college. Coach Andy Reid's version of the West Coast offense is "complicated and sophisticated," Mitchell says. "It takes a lot to learn it. But playing in the Pac-10 definitely gave me a good head start. Now it's a matter of repetition and getting the timing down."

Getting the timing and whatever down took some time. My impression was that until this year he was still reading his Pac-10 press clippings rather than applying himself. I think he has really kicked it up a notch.
