While the Amarone does have higher alcohol, that "Bite" is likely due to the special process the grapes go through called the "passito" method. The grapes are dried in a cool airy room for up to 4 months which concentrates the sugars and flavors. Amarone means "strongly bitter" and is called such when the fermentation process is allowed to continue until the wine is completely dry. If the fermentation is stopped early, there is a residual sugar and it is then called a Recioto. This info comes from the "Wine Lovers Companion" by the Herbsts.

I liked the Masi, and liked the Valpolicella better , but I recall paying a pretty steep price for both so you got a deal.
