If I weren't trying to avoid thinking right now, I would be very concerned about the growing schism in our country.

I stumbled into a locker room conversation yesterday which reminded me about something I had forgotten. They were taking about the editorial or op ed or whatever in the Post the other day about how Bush wasn't being very "conservative." One woman was from West Virginia, where, at the time, you couldn't tell the Dems from the Reps platform wise. I remembered that much of my aversion to partisan politics came from the fact at that time that there really wasn't much difference and that politicians' party affiliations seemed to be more a matter of social club rather than ideology. Over the years that has changed, which is what I wanted. It made more sense to me to have parties defined by ideology. But the schism seems to have become destructive. I will think about that some more when I'm, like you, more in a mood for thinking.
