kumar...on things like whether or not trips are paid for First Ladies, I think that will depend on what has been historically done before.

Shoot, if we can send someone like former Ambassador of Gabon (not currently) to Africa, and pay his expenses, for some factfinding for the CIA, that the had CIA Director knew nothing about, I would think someone could figure out a way to pay for Mrs. Bush to go to Afghanistan.

The women of that country have been oppressed for so long, and now at least can start to make some of their own choices, I'd think it would be a most worthwhile project.

If you are trying to put this in the same category as Hillary's trip...I don't think there is a relationship. Hillary is a US Senator, and as such, would (and IMO, should) have her expenses paid if the reason she goes anywhere has to do with her assigned Committee responsibilities.

My question in that respect was, and still is, why weren't there any Republican members from the Armed Forces Committee on that very same fact finding trip?

Karen, u state events that are now history. You and I as taxpayers have contributed to. Cant change it.
Whats your thought on the future - which can be shaped if not changed ? - specifically : Laura Bush's desire to visit Afghanistan in spring - we are in early winter now.
IF the visit happens, should the taxpayer wear the cost ?
