I think the point everyone is missing is that Unicom is planning to make GSM1X handsets the standard over time. Just like cdma one carriers are making 1X handsets standard.
Subscribers don't know they are buying 1X handsets, they are becoming 1X subscribers because they have little or no choice.

It just doesn't make sense for any carier to introduce GSM1X handsets if they offer it as a permanent choice to the consumer. Why buy it if GSM has full nation wide coverage.
The purpose of GSM1X is more for the carrier's benefiet than the subscriber. Unicom will not realize the full benefiet if they leave it as a choice of the subscriber.

Once it is standard in all but the lowest end phones such as Nokia's then Unicom has a migration path from their almost fully loaded GSM network to their expanding CDMA network and the subscribers go along for the ride knowingly or unknowingly.

Great for Q, they get paid on all Unicom phone sales instead of only some of them. Great for Unicom because they can now concentrate capex on one network rather than two.

Bottom line if they leave it up to the subscriber totally, they run the risk of losing money on their GSM1X investment. I beleive they won't take that chance.

All IMHO of course.
