While I was writing this, I got the call I was awaiting from Masahirosan. The answer is that Nidec is not paying royalties to Seagate. Nidec's own FDB technology is utilized in third party motor sales. Only the motors that are produced for Seagate use the Seagate FDB technology.

Gross margin in HDD motors is around 14%. Overall profit margin is currently being impacted by Sankyo acquisition. As IR chief, Masahirosan is personally targeting market cap and will shortly be meeting with investors in NY, Boston, Toronto, Chicago and San Francisco to improve Nidec's "brand recognition" among institutional investors. Nidec wants to be a 5B yen company in sales by 2005. He didn't specify what the exchange rate would be. <g>
