I could even agree with some of the points in the article, if the author didn't express them in such demagogic, cartoonish terms:
This war, should it come, is intended to mark the official emergence of the United States as a full-fledged global empire... It would be the culmination of a plan 10 years or more in the making, carried out by those who believe the United States must seize the opportunity for global domination
As proof, he notes that we still have bases in Germany in Japan, 57 years after the end of WWII. Well, excuse me, but it is news to me that we consider Germany and Japan tributory provinces of our American empire, or that they consider themselves subjects of the empire either. Tell you what, let's ask any Germans posting to this thread if they consider themselves Subjects of the Empire.
Is it just possible that there are degrees of influence between none at all and outright rule, something more along the lines of a sphere of influence? The author doesn't seem to think so, so the possibility is never discussed, nor any likely alternative outcomes. The proposed American war is contrasted against some unarticulated but far better outcome - whose actual parameters always seem to remain fuzzy, and which skip over hard problems. |
