Holiday Shopping Season Starts With A Sputter 12/02 The latest chain store sales figures are a telling sign of the shaky state of consumers and the economy. Instinet Research reported a 2.8% decline in retail sales for the month of November. And according to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, chain store sales fell 0.1% in the week ending November 29. Keep in mind that that includes the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, which is traditionally among the busiest shopping days of the year.
