"That place is the Death Zone these days. So sad to see how much the company as gone downhill in the last few years."

Well, the WFR has been painful. The group I was considering moving to before I decided to go off on my own in 1998 has laid off 75% of the staff they had at the peak in 2000! In late 1998 they were paying some of us to volunteer to leave then a year later they couldn't hire enough folks. This lasted from 1999 through 2000 then in 2001 through 2003 they have cut so much it has really hurt. I have friends who didn't want to retire that were forced to leave due to layoffs... exceptional engineers with tons of experience. One was asked to be a principal in a startup that will probably compete with them...

I blame it all on WorldCon for lying about the growth along with a few other telecoms that also lied by selling each other capacity to show too much growth that was not there. The big problem is those estimating the markets for future products didn't "bother themselves" to do a real check to see if their customers had a viable business or business model before they spent hundreds of millions on capacity that was not used.

Also, it is pretty miserable at most tech companies in the Sillycone Valley these days. People get jobs and are expected to work 50 and 60 hr weeks at lower pay than in the past. Without the option incentive, I wonder how long it will last?
