think the larger companies are going to wise up and buy the top of the search listings away from the little guys

It's already happening; the search engines are quite willing to be bought. But a broker like Ebay depends on providing, if not a level playing field, at least a playing field that is unlevel in ways transparent and available to the purse of many.
